CaribScribe
For researchers, archivists and oral historians

Transcribe and translate Caribbean interviews without them ever leaving your computer.

CaribScribe turns recordings in Guyanese, Jamaican and other Caribbean Creoles into transcripts with speakers and translations. Everything runs on your own Mac, encrypted, with no internet needed.

Made for interviews that have to stay private

Ethics boards, communities and participants trust you with their words. CaribScribe is designed so that trust is never handed to a cloud service.

Never in the cloud

Speech recognition, speaker identification and translation all run on your computer. CaribScribe blocks itself from the internet while it works.

Encrypted everywhere

Recordings, transcripts, consent forms and photos are encrypted with your passphrase. Recordings made on phones are sealed so only your computer can open them.

Hears Caribbean Creoles

Tuned for Guyanese, Jamaican, Trini, Bajan, Belizean and Eastern Caribbean speech, with a phrasebook that explains words like backdam and bin.

Knows who spoke

Speakers are separated automatically. Rename them, fix lines, and redo speakers if more people joined than expected.

Translates offline

Into English, Spanish, French, Dutch, Portuguese, Hindi, Chinese and Haitian Kreyòl. Creole is translated via English for better results.

Record in the field

Use your phone or tablet with no signal. Consent forms, topic guides and recordings sync to your computer when you're back on Wi-Fi.

How it works

  1. Record or upload

Record on your phone, tablet or computer, or upload audio or video. Complete digital consent first.

  2. Transcribe privately

Your computer writes the transcript, separates speakers and translates. No internet connection is used.

  3. Review and share safely

Correct the text, add meanings, redact names, blur faces and disguise voices, then export encrypted files.

Languages and dialects

Transcription quality depends on the recording and the variety spoken. Results are a draft for you to check, not a final transcript.

Consent, built in

Signed-on-screen, recorded-oral and photographed-paper consent, with your ethics-approved wording. Recording can stay off until consent is complete, and every form keeps a fingerprint of the exact wording agreed to.

Questions

Does any audio go to the internet?

No. CaribScribe processes everything on your computer and blocks its own internet access while running. The only time it connects is when you choose to download the AI models, and then only to caribscribe.app for model files.

Do I need a powerful computer?

A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) and 16 GB of memory works well. An hour of audio typically takes from several minutes to around an hour, depending on the computer and the model you choose.

How do phones connect?

Phones and tablets connect to your computer over your own Wi-Fi. There's nothing to install from an app store. After a one-time setup they can record offline. See the guide.

What happens when my licence ends?

Your interviews always stay yours. A licence includes all new versions released while it's active, and keeps working for those versions afterwards. Without a licence you can still open, edit and export everything.
